Where's Harry Reid?

I've been wondering about this. We had a week of John Kerry's gaff last Monday, where he said in his own words that soldiers in Iraq were too stoopid to finish their college courses.

Harry Reid, on the other hand, has simply dropped off the media's radar. This in the face of new allegations of (and one would hope some serious investigations into) long-wispered graft on his part. Not since an AP story dated October 11, 2006, have we even seen him on TV. As the Minority Leader in the US Senate, I would have thought he would get equal play with Nancy Pelosi (his counterpart in the US House of Representatives).

The AP reported that Reid took a $1.1 million dollar payment on a real estate deal involving property he hadn't owned for 3 years. He failed to report his position to the ethics committee as he is required to do, due (as he claims) to a "clerical error". As soon as this issue became public, though, it was discovered his "clerical errors" have been helping improve his financial status quite a lot!

Now, we find out that he used campaign contributions to pay off the staff (in Christmas bonuses) of the hotel where he keeps his offices. His "clerical error" here was that, while the hotel staff thought it was a gift, he reported it as payroll.

Kerry and Pelosi may be embarrassing to their party and supporters in the press, but Reid is an actual albatross hanging arround their necks. No wonder he isn't getting any play in the Liberal media.

Life's Defenders

I am about to stop for lunch. I decided I had better write this now, though. This sort of thing is better done on an empty stomach.

I mean, Michael J. Fox to the contrary notwithstanding, every living human has the inherent right to a defense. We don't execute capital criminals without trial. Even Fox is entitled to a defense. Why should it be open season on cloned infants?

That is what we are talking about, here. Fox and his friends may actually believe that cloning babies for the sake of slaughtering them in medical tests will make Fox all better, but that's not the real issue.

Even if they are right (and they're not), it isn't customary in the Free West to round up a class of people to dump them in the meat grinder so that someone who is sick will have a little hope of getting well.

Nobody is against research, per se. Research is a good thing, and we all promote it. But cloning babies isn't part of research. It is a business practice; producing a product to be bought and sold. Even our most Liberal judges have (as yet) refused to allow people to be considered "property", for fear that they may one day become someone else's property, too.

Yet, here we are, once again, required to debate the obvious. All our laws are based on the Golden Rule that Jesus proclaimed: "What you would not have others do to you, refrain from doing this to others." We agree to live under these laws, because we want others to live under them, too. It is a simple matter of self-defense.

Fox and these friends of his, on the other hand, want your baby dropped in a blender. Maybe Fox should jump in first, then we can have done with this issue?
